Lighttubes

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

Lighttubes are light units with graceful, glowing stems, created for The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

The Norwegian architectural firm, Snøhetta, chose to integrate solar panels on a large scale in their project “Lighttubes.” In collaboration with out-sider, which focused on the technical development, we adapted the design to local seasons and lighting conditions. Lighttubes is a pioneering project that has had significant implications for out-sider’s work with sustainable and solar-powered urban lighting. This innovative lighting unit can be found in Saudi Arabia at The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture

The sun provides us with a gift throughout the day - 100% free and without CO2 emissions. Its light generates energy, which is converted into sophisticated and comfortable night lighting for pedestrians, cyclists, and runners. An intelligent design meets state-of-the-art technology, and together they create ambient lighting for urban spaces: parks, pathways, and running tracks
