AART Designers is a Scandinavian design studio working closely with AART, an internationally acclaimed architectural practice based in Aarhus, Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm. In 2007 AART teamed up with out-sider and designed LOOP, a piece of urban furniture as a part of Aarhus Festival. Inspired by traditional circular gathering points – the fireplace, thingstead, etc. The idea was to develop a piece of furniture that would invite people of all ages to meet, talk, or just have a break. The result was a mobile unit with an intuitive shape, bright color, and a welcoming warm, yet solid material. With its inviting, playful design, the original LOOP has been an instant success growing into a range of new products and colors. The LOOP series features a large number of modular elements providing infinite possibilities for creative, welcoming spaces and social interaction.

The design has iconic and graphic qualities, while being a coherent, innovative piece of furniture with many seats – inviting people to interact with each other. Holscher’s intention was to create a product family, and it now counts 13 urban pieces of furniture.

Urbanlab nordic operates on a vision and idea-based approach within architectural design, urbanism, and landscape spaces. We believe in architecture as a developmental agent when we are brave enough to rethink a place’s usage, needs, communities, materials, spaces, constructions, technical solutions, and climate objectives. We work from a creatively architectural standpoint with an overarching ambition to create robust and sensory buildings, cities, and landscapes in a positive interaction between nature and culture. The Boa furniture was developed for the Aarhus Festival in 2009. It is a colorful seating/standing piece that stands like a living creature, winding itself above the ground, inviting fun and spontaneous gatherings and stays. Its form and structure challenge the conventional and up on a world of possibilities. Its functional and sculptural character not only adds visual appeal but also a playful dimension to the surroundings. It can be a place to sit, stand, lie, or even dance, depending on how it is placed and used.

At GHB we believe that architectural form springs from the unique specific character and situation of a place. This is why we always create our designs in dialogue with local context. In our work with planning assignments, exteriors, landscapes and urban furnishing we merge function and aesthetics to create poetic, high-quality solutions for public spaces. Working out should be fun. This was the starting point of landscape architect Mikkel Hjort when developing the new multi-training facility FitStation. Being a former runner himself he knows how much it takes to build up one’s body. Working with Thomas Nolan, his former coach and current partner in running coach business Running26, he decided to develop a workout station with 16 integrated exercises. The workout stations were developed for Herning Fodboldeksperimentarium who wanted to develop an alternative football facility to challenge users beyond the traditional offers of football fields. The project has already been awarded 2 prizes: one from Herning municipal council in 2011 and a bronze medal from the International Olympic Committee in 2013.

GUSTIN LANDSKAB operates with urban planning, landscape and urban space/public spaces. We are dedicated and visionary in our approach to creating a better city – one with more experiences, poetry, and vitality. Our focus lies in crafting vibrant landscapes made for people – spaces where laughter, play, and life thrive. Every project we undertake is a fusion of humor, dedicated work, professional enthusiasm, factual data, and unbridled creativity. With years of experience, we build upon a diverse portfolio of successful projects. Satellite was created via the project “Kærlig hilsen fra Nr. Snede” – Love from Nr. Snede – a project in the Danish municipality of Ikast/Brande working with young people in Danish provincial towns. The project accommodates young people on their own terms – creating a place to meet, hang out and feel young. It focuses on sounds, dreams and networks. Soundscapes from different places around the world create dreams and curiosity. Young people can log onto Satellite via their mobile phones. From here they can step into a network of dreams, sounds, poetry and contact other young people in small provincial towns.

The fact that Dirk Wynants never goes with the flow, but always develops innovative and progressive designs, is definitely part of his success story. Dirk’s philosophy revolves around: adding value, innovate or die, loving the planet, classics for the future, sexy excellent stuff, reason for existence, design being human, and these aren’t just furniture, these are “tools for togetherness.”

I am very interested in the world of objects and how people build emotional links naturally. It depends on shapes and colors, in the experience of use and in the identity that you want to show using them. As a designer I try to manage these concepts by the right use of materials and processes.

When you stop to take a rest while trekking in the mountains, the ideal thing is to find a comfy rock to sit or lean on. I decided to turn over the situation and think about how the ideal rock should be, The Rock is the answer.

The Rock works well both as urban furniture and as a garden ornament

“I believe that we could be living in an entirely different world – one that is full of real contemporary inspiring objects, spaces, places, worlds, spirits and experiences. Design is not about solving problems, but about a rigorous beautification of our built environments.
I concentrate on the functionality but the design must also include a human touch – something soft that touches you and makes you feel good.”

Karim Rashid was inspired by clouds and flowing lava when designing the LAVA seating unit.
Since LAVA has no predetermined function its use is left up to the imagination and intuition of the users.
